The Legend of the Power Animals
According to an ancient legend, animals and humans could once talk to each other. During this time, a dispute arose among the most powerful animals over who should be their leader. The bear had always held this position due to his strength and wisdom, but the bison, bald eagle, and coyote wanted to take his place.
The bison claimed to be the strongest and most generous. The bald eagle asserted his wisdom and clear vision. The coyote boasted of his survival skills and curiosity. The bear argued that he was strong and thoughtful and had served his fellow animals well.
Mudjekeewis, the guardian spirit of the west, appeared and explained that fighting for power would harm the law of unity. He proposed that each animal should align its strength with one of the cardinal directions to strengthen the medicine wheel:
Coyote
South, for growth and trust
Bison
North, for renewal and purity
Bear
West, for strength and thoughtfulness
Bald Eagle
East, for wisdom and enlightenment
In this way, the animals would use their unique powers to contribute to the harmony of creation.

Cathrin, a visual artist and painter with a deep passion for world travel, brings her unique experiences and inspiration together in her work.
Her special affinity with the indigenous peoples of North America is a recurring theme in her art. And she shares it with her boyfriend Peter Kalb. Their shared connection is clearly visible in their latest creation: the Power Animals. Together they designed the wheel, after which Cathrin took charge of its realization.
Last year they created the picture book ‘Dancing around the sun’ about the creation stories. All these works of art pay tribute to the rich culture and traditions of the indigenous peoples.
