But I couldn’t help myself.
I was finally going to meet my big hero. And not only that. I was also going to take lessons from him.
Manolo Sanlúcar
How incredibly much I learned from him.
A few years back, I started composing a tribute to him. Because to this day, I find his music very special. It touches me time and again.
Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 78 in 2022. This gave my song an extra charge.
I had a special recording location in mind for it. A very old church.
Without saying it, I received a message out of the blue that a very old church with beautiful acoustics in the south of Portugal was available.
The little church, sandwiched between hills covered with a sea of rock rose flowers, is no longer in use. When I opened the door, a snake coiled itself almost invisibly in an alcove, a gecko along the wall quickly ran for shelter and bats hanging from the ceiling continued to wait patiently for their private concert.
Querido Sanlucar is the result. You can watch and listen to it now here.
I also recorded nine more compositions of my own. Partly reworked songs, partly brand new. All brought together on my tenth album. But also my first album without accompanying instruments. It really feels like coming home to me. The title of the album is not homecoming for nothing.
I wish you much listening pleasure!
